The First week of December

A resource for anyone who wants to work in fashion. Don't know Oscar de la Renta from Emilio de la Morena? Don't know Mariacarla from Viktoriya? Don't fret: with weekly profile updates of models, designers, stylists, and so on, you'll know who's who in no time. Add to that reviews (cultural enrichment and savvy is surely what makes good journalism), titbits from my struggle to make it into magazines and general fashion features and you've got yourself a blog..
Born in Moscow, Russia, Pivovarova never dreamed of becoming a model until a friend and photographer, Igor Vishnyakov, took photos of her. He gave the photos to international modeling agency IMG and her career took off. Before this, she was studying art history at Russian University for the Humanities.
ReplyDeleteSoon after she signed with IMG in 2005, she walked for Prada and followed this with a campaign for the company. She made fashion history by being the face of Prada for six consecutive seasons. In July 2007 Prada released a new fragrance Infusion d'Iris, the print advertising campaign features smoky-eyed Sasha wearing leather gloves.
In the May 2007 issue of American Vogue she was featured on the cover with Doutzen Kroes, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmermann, Jessica Stam, Agyness Deyn, Coco Rocha, Hilary Rhoda, Chanel Iman, and Lily Donaldson as the new crop of supermodels. In her interview, she talked about her love for art and reading.
Pivovarova's three-year campaign contract with Prada expired after the Spring/Summer 2008 campaign season. Pivovarova was noticeably absent from the runway shows during the Fall/Winter 08 runway season due to illness,[citation needed] appearing in only one show during New York Fashion Week. However, she returned to the runways on the final day of Paris Fashion Week to close the Miu Miu runway show as an exclusive.
When asked what her favorite part of the job is, she said the photo shoots and traveling. She told CNN in an interview, that she gets to meet people and see places that she would never be able to meet or see, if it had not been for modeling. She is known for her horse-like walk, muscular body, small pupils and dark undereyes, and feline like features. Also her height, natural appearance, and goofy/fun personality backstage and serious personality on the runway.
She is currently working with Dhani Harrison, son of late George Harrison. Sasha and Harrison are recreating fashions of The Beatles era in the line "Here Comes the Son".
Before she was a model, she was an art student in Moscow. Her current home in Brooklyn, New York doubles as an art studio (in a recent issue of American Vogue magazine, they photographed Sasha's Brooklyn loft. Pivovorova said in a Teen Vogue interview, "I was playing with pencils while the other girls were playing with dolls." In her free time, Pivovarova loves to paint and draw. Her paintings were shown in a gallery in Paris. French Vogue also published some of Sasha's works. She often is seen with stencils, paints, and other art tools in her bag and is usually photographed backstage drawing something. She said in an interview with CNN, that she uses anything as a canvas; hotel papers, casting and that days itinerary papers, and anything she can find basically.
Recently, Sasha was married to husband and long-time friend, the photographer Igor Vishnyakov. He calls Sasha his "best friend" and said in an interview that "she still is the same shy person, as when I first met her".
On May 7, 2008 Sasha attended the very exclusive Costume Institute Gala in Emanuel Ungaro, which was held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is currently in collaboration with Miuccia Prada to produce a book in the upcoming year of her own artwork. It will be in the form of a scrapbook and include drawings, photography, and collages. She might also be illustrating a children's book for Karl Lagerfeld.
